Chapter:

Design-of-Masonry-Walls-for-Gravity-Loads

Explain effective height of walls.

Effective Height of a Wall:

  1. When there is Full Restraint at top and bottom, then effective height is equal to 0.75H.
  2. When there is Full Restraint at one end and only lateral restraint at the other end, then effective height is equal to 0.85H.
  3. When there is only lateral restraint without rotational restraint at both top and bottom, then effective height is equal to 1.00H.
  4. When there is full restraint at bottom and no restraint at the top, then effective height is equal to 1.50H.
  5. When there is  no restraint at the top and only lateral strain at bottom, then effective height is equal to 2.00H.

Effective Height of a Column:

  1. If it is laterally supported, then effective height is equal to the actual height.
  2. If it is not laterally supported, then effective height is twice the actual height.

Effective Height of a Opening in Walls:

If the opening occurs in a wall such th....
