Geotextiles can serve various purposes when used for soil stabilization. It can act as a drain and important performance criteria are mass, permeability and transmissivity. Resistance is criteria for function of protection.

The gradation index value ranges from 0.3 to 0.5 and it depends on shape of particle. The sediment analysis is done on basis of Stoke?s law, which assumes spherical particles. The gradation index for spherical particles if found to be 0.5.

There are two field tests used to check proper construction. They are moisture content test, which is checked during compaction and or test is for dry density, which is checked soon after compaction is done.

The method of cement stabilization can be used in most of soil types like granular, silty and lean clays. Cement cannot be employed in organic soils because process causes a delay in setting and a reduction in strength.

Lime and cement can be added to improve properties of highly expansive soil. Usually addition of lime improves most properties of black cotton soils. Cement requirement is high and becomes costly, hence lime is preferred.

Analytical method is used in proportioning of aggregates and it is becoming popular with advent of computers. It uses numerical methods to solve equations equations that are formed based on aggregate gradation.

Cement stabilized roads can be cured using two commonly used methods – bituminous spraying and covering with moist soil. It is necessary to have a certain amount of water retained after curing.

The soil particles passing 4.75 mm sieve must be less than 50%. The particles passing 0.425 mm sieve must be in between 35 to 100%. These properties of soil with respect to ir particle size are desired for stabilization using bitumen.

The first step in construction process is pulverization of soil. Then bitumen is added to soil and mixed thoroughly, bitumen is not spread over soil. The mix is n subjected to aeration and compacted to desired thickness.

There are no specific methods to design thickness of stabilizing mixes. So, mixes like soil-cement, soil-lime and pozzolanic concrete can be designed as a semi-rigid pavement. Bitumen is not designed as a semi-rigid pavement.
