Long and Short Wall Method:

• In the long wall and short wall method, the wall along the length of the room is considered to be a long wall and the wall perpendicular to the length of the room is considered to be a short wall.
• To get the measurement of materials and work, the length of the long wall or short wall, and the center line lengths of individual walls are calculated first.
• Then the length of the long wall, (out to out) may be calculated after adding half the breadth at each end to its center line length.
• Thus the length of the short wall is measured into in and may be found by deducting half the breadth from its center line length at each end. These lengths are multiplied by breadth and depth to get quantities.
• The length of the long wall usually decreases from earthwork to brickwork in the superstructure while the short wall increases.

∴ Longwall length out to out = center to center length + half breadth on one side + half breadth on another side.
